Summer Camp FAQ

Who do I contact in the case of an emergency?

The emergency contact list will be emailed to parents and campers.

What do I pack?

A camp packing list specific to the venue will be emailed to parents and campers. Basic items include walking shoes, slippers/flip flops, clothes, pyjamas, toiletries, a towel, swimwear, a sleeping bag, a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat.

How are rooming decisions made?

We make great efforts to ensure campers are comfortable with whom they share a room, and we will room campers with friends as best we can. At camp, the rooms accommodate 4-6 campers and 2 adult cabin leaders. Campers are grouped based on their gender, age, and school.

Boys and girls are always housed separately and in different buildings while at camp.

We are also happy to accommodate special requests. If we can help make someone more comfortable, we’re all for it!

Is it true that you take away all electronics?

Yes, while at camp, we expect campers to keep electronics in the cabin at all times. This will be a highlight of the week for kids as they disconnect and fully engage with each other, their leaders, and the content for the week.

Who are the leaders at camp?

Young Life leaders are trained staff and volunteer adults who live in Hong Kong, care about kids, and want to walk alongside them.

The volunteer leaders have and will build relationships with students before coming to camp through Young Life clubs, Campaigners, and other events, and will endeavour to remain connected to students and facilitate connections for them after the Summer Camp.

What about the spiritual content of the trip?

Young Life is a non-denominational Christian outreach organization, and our mission is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. Students will hear a clear, relevant, and well-presented message of the Gospel, the story of God’s love for us as displayed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We welcome students from all backgrounds to Young Life, and our group will surely have a wide variety of responses and beliefs about the messages they’ll hear. Students are not coerced or pressured to respond in any way, and we respect and love kids regardless of their response.

Young Life camp creates a space where every night, the kids can hear the story of Jesus through speakers and process what it means to have a relationship with Him through small group discussions in cabin times and optional one-on-one talks with their leaders if they so choose.

For more information, please don’t hesitate to ask. If you’d like to know more about what we believe, you can view our statement of faith here.

Who attends Summer Camp?

Summer Camp is for students in secondary school (aged 12-18 years). Campers from across Hong Kong are usually accompanied by their Young Life leader, church youth pastor, or invited by a friend who has a leader/pastor.

What happens at Summer Camp?

Summer Camp is about high-adventure activities, great food, engaging speakers, and making new friends! Will an adult travel to and from the campsite with campers?

Campers will be greeted by Young Life leaders at Tung Chung MTR Station between 2pm-2:30pm on Wednesday, July 17. The campers will travel with the leaders by bus to HKYWCA Sydney Leong Holiday Lodge.

At the end of Summer Camp, leaders will accompany campers back to Tung Chung MTR Station at 12:30pm. Cabins will eat lunch together near Tung Chung MTR Station.

We expect that campers will be dropped off and picked up at Tung Chung MTR Station, or trusted to make their way to and from the station by the parent/guardian.

What does the camp cost cover?

The camp fee covers less than half of all costs related to: travel, meals, accommodations, program, and other fees per camper. We are thankful to depend on the generous contributions of those who champion camp as a core aspect of reaching adolescents in Hong Kong.
